“Light My Way Home” touches upon my complex feelings about Family, Belonging, Safety and Love. With these works, I reach into the world of Magical Realism. The dreamlike imagery of nature, neon houses, wooden structures, and string lights suggest the levity of family and relationships that simultaneously can feel magical and perhaps unattainable in my search for the Ideal of Home.

My on-going series called “Still + Life,” which puts a focus on the beauty of dead birds that my friends and I have photographed over the years. The title of the series itself is a play on words from the art form of Still Life painting. By adding back spark and magic to these images, I can memorialize their former lives. “There is Still Life within.”

All beings thrive on desire and passion.
The fabled story of the Bower Bird has long been a fascination for me. The male song bird can spend up to a year collecting twigs, berries and small objects in order to build beautiful and elaborate nests, all in the hopes of attracting a mate. These paintings are my empathetic reaction to the Bower Bird’s mission for love, companionship and ultimately, approval. Lush settings, depicting objects I collected or scenes of a Louisiana swamp, are interwoven with pattern and design. We are all driven by the ideals and relentless toil of desire and hope. Some just show it off.

As the middle of three girls in my immigrant family, I have often felt out of place. Choosing an artistic path, rather than a steadier life of academics, I have always been the odd one out. “Robot Bunnies” is a comical way of exploring my place in the traditional Chinese family with whom I grew up with.
This on-going series follows the relationship between a couple and the strange creature that appears at their doorstep. The Robot Bunnie is not a toy and not quite a pet. The couple has to contend with this playful but sometimes disruptive part of their lives.

This series explores the nuances of relationships.
The Bee stands in as a metaphor for Love and the figures are the drama of Love. Bees themselves have the duality of being both cute and soft, while also having stingers that can potentially inflict pain. Love can sting… but just a little.

My paintings are unconventional self-portraits that explore my ambivalent feelings towards being an artist and how it affects my views of the world. The Toy-like characters personify my neuroses and hearken back to my childhood fondness for soft playthings. There is a dynamic push and pull between the human figures and the characters, which are interchangeably protagonists and victims, both winning as well as losing. Collectively, the scenes illustrate the struggles and rewards of an Artist’s life.
